The 1995 Master Plan provided a sound beginning for the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and The Next Step establishes a new pattern of growth for the next 20 years.  The updated plan emphasizes the making of sites and places, and the proposed locations of buildings and open space should endure to provide guidelines for master planning decisions in the years to come.
The University has long been below the system-wide per student standard for space per-student. The Next Step recommends much-needed additional space resulting in a substantial improvement to the square footage per-student ratio.
On-campus housing will be expanded in the 2000 Plan to bring the University residential population to approximately twenty percent of the total student body.  The plan provides new graduate housing near the south central area to accommodate expanding graduate studies and increased enrollment.
The 2000 Plan establishes an internal campus loop road enclosing 200 acres to provide new sites for parking garages to reduce traffic impacts.  A new crescent-shaped green space and main entry is established and there is a shift in the north/south axis to take advantage of more gradual topography, adding to a system of well-connected open spaces surrounded by new and existing buildings.
The 2000 Plan incorporates the Charlotte Institute with more than 1.5 million square feet.  The new west campus will establish an important connection to the community and to mass transit on U.S. Highway 29.
The Next Step offers an exciting vision for the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.  These changes will affect every part of the campus and reflect an aggressive agenda for meeting the needs of 30,000 students.  The Next Step, indeed, provides the campus community and the public with a very special place to dwell.
